Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) offer autonomous geolocation with a global coverage and currently, there are four known GNSS constellations namely: NAVSTAR, GLONASS, Galileo and Compass. However, NAVSTAR is the only operational GNSS constellation available.

GNSS augmentations are first generation satellite systems, providing enhanced accuracy and integrity monitoring for navigation, which can either be Satellite Based Augmentation Systems (SBAS) or Ground Based Augmentation Systems (GBAS). Some of the augmentations systems currently existing are WAAS (USA), EGNOS (Europe), MSAS (Japan), LAAS (USA) and most recently, NigNET (Nigeria).

Implementating the network of Continous Operating Reference Stations (CORS) which makes up NigNET, began in 2009. Today, the NigNET CORS network currently consisting 9 locations and is fully operational.

The NigNET network is considered a part of the GNSS Nigeria initiative, which is geared towards 'creating awareness and improving geolocation' within Nigeria. GNSS Nigeria was the brain child of VISUAL EARTH prior to being handed over to Office of the Surveyor General of the Federation and was in collaboration with Trimble Navigation and also Space & Earth Geodetic Analysis Laboratory (SEGAL).

The conference is scheduled to hold from 1st till 2nd September 2010, at Abuja International Conference Centre and the networking event holds in the evening of 2nd September 2010 at Nicon Luxury Hotel, Abuja

The GNSS NIGERIA conference and networking event, presents an opportunity to create national awareness, review and examine applicable case studies that highlights effective use and also develop new business opportunities using Nigerias GNSS Ground Based Augmentation System, also known as NigNET; which was recently implemented across nine different locations in the country.

To do this, a two day conference has been organized with each day carrying a unique theme and within each themed day, presentations are given which further highlight the over-all theme of the day. There are also case study presentations which will be done during the conference; these are to help highlight opportunities which exist from the use of services from NigNET.

The themes for the conference examine the future of GNSS services within Nigeria, exploring the possibility of CORS network enhancements and review various service opportunities by examining case studies.
